ASE Certified Mechanics

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, or ASE for short, is an independent non-profit organization that has been working to advance auto repair services since 1972. ASE certifications are earned by passing ASE certification exams, and these exams are no cake walk – roughly one-third of all first-time test takers do not earn their ASE certification. Once certified, mechanics must renew their certifications by taking an updated test every five years.

The ASE certification exams are written by a combination of experienced auto industry executives, technicians and manufacturers to test competency across over 40 auto service areas. These exams test individual auto repair service technicians, not whole auto repair shops. This means that you can be sure that ASE certified mechanics have the specialized knowledge you need for your car repairs.

In addition to passing an ASE exam, mechanics and technicians are required to have at least two years of training provided by an auto shop or one year of training and a two-year automotive repair degree to become ASE certified.
